POTSDAM -- Record-setting high temperatures were set in the North Country on Christmas Eve as highs nearly hit 70 degrees.
It was 68 degrees in Potsdam at 7:30 a.m. and winds were gusting to 38 mph in Potsdam and 40 in Massena on Thursday, Dec. 24, according to the airports’ weather instruments.
The high temperature at Massena’s Richards Field, an official National Weather Service weather station, was 67 at 9 a.m. The previous record high for Dec. 24 there was 56, set in 1957.
The temperatures dropped later during the day Thursday.
In contrast, the record low for Dec. 24 in Massena was minus 30, set in 1973. And in 1970 on that date, 5.7 inches of snow fell at Massena’s airport.
Normal snowfall at Massena, as calculated by the NWS, is about 14 inches in December and about six inches in November – and this year we haven’t come close to either of those figures for even a total so far this year.
