Century old stained glass windows restored at Potsdam Methodist Church

POTSDAM – A large 111-year-old stained glass window is being reinstalled in the Potsdam Methodist Church, following restoration by Edward Dehors of Historical Restorations Foundation.

Made by famed Ogdensburg stained glass artist Harry Horwood and family, the window depicting Madonna and the Christ child was removed over a year ago and sent for repair to Dehors, in Martville, northwest of Syracuse.

The restoration took three times longer than estimated. Dehors said epoxy cement used over the years for weatherproofing was very difficult to remove. Due to some additional problems, two window sections were not reinstalled last Wednesday, but he hopes for completion next month.

The 23 leaded panels of the glass window were individually dismantled, cleaned, recolored if needed, and restored with fresh lead between the panes.

The project cost $22,000, but Dehors said he put many more hours into it, free of charge. He said he is the only non-profit stained glass restoration business in the United States.

Dehors has been in the stained glass business for 44 years. He has restored the windows in several St. Lawrence County churches, including in Canton, Norwood, Madrid, Waddington, Hammond and Gouverneur. Pictures of some of these windows and others he has restored in New York State can be viewed on his website http://historicalrestorations.org

Harry Horwood and family made many stained glass windows in northern New York, Ottawa, Quebec. NYC, and Washington, D.C. in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

In St. Lawrence County, his windows are in St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Norwood, and many Ogdensburg locations, including Frederic Remington Museum, First Presbyterian Church, Notre Dame Church, Congregational Church, and First Baptist Church, according to the Ogdensburg history website http://ogdensburghistory.blogspot.com
