Centerline ‘rumble strips’ to be installed: Canton-Potsdam, Canton-Ogdensburg, Gouverneur-DeKalb, Hannawa-Sevey’s

A new safety feature similar to rumble strips will be installed on some state routes in St. Lawrence County beginning next month.

What the state Department of Transportation calls centerline audible roadway delineators -- CARDS -- will be installed along U.S. Rt. 11 for seven miles between Canton and Potsdam and for 14 miles between Gouverneur and DeKalb, on State Rt. 56 for 26 miles from Hannawa Falls to State Rt. 3 at Sevey's Corners, and 15 miles of State Rt. 68 from Canton to Ogdensburg beginning in mid-July, according to DOT Region 7 spokesman Michael Flick.

"CARDs will become part of our north country transportation system this summer," Flick said.

The centerline strips "are milled in similar to the edge-line rumble strips, but the spacing is greater and the depth is less," Flick said. They are designed to alert drivers to their vehicles approaching the centerline.

There will be breaks in the strips at signalized intersections, crosswalks, and as needed in village settings.
