MASSENA -- The St. Lawrence Centre drew a crowd of spectators and a growing number of participating cars and motorcycles for the Wendy’s 2nd Annual Happy Days Car & Cycle Show held there recently.
The event raised about $1,400 for the Boys & Girls Club of Massena.
Registrants were required to pay a $10 fee, and had a chance to win some unusually unique trophies to commemorate their win. The trophies were hand-made by Gerry Serge, Gerald Serge Jr. and Seth Curtis of Custom Service Center.
“They spend all year collecting car parts that they use in making the trophies,” explained Wendy’s manager and event coordinator Tammy Serge.
The car show has become a family affair for Ms. Serge, her husband and son create the trophies. She and her daughter, Elizabeth Deon, organize the event. Her brother is the DJ. Her sister-in-law and two of her nieces are the pin-up girls. Her father judges the event. Her sister helps sell 50/50 tickets, and her mother comes out to support.
“We kind of call it our family get together,” joked Serge. “We didn’t plan it that way. It just worked out that way.”
This year, Wendy’s management decided to offer the proceeds from the event to the Boys & Girls Club of Massena. Between the registration fees, a $30 donation from BD Entertainment who offered the bounce houses at the event, and about $46 in donations from Jason Foster and Leonard Nesbit from Elite Events by Lenny, $1,400 was raised for the Club.
“We are getting ready to open our Clubhouse for the new school year,” said Boys & Girls Club of Massena Chief Professional Officer, Debra Donatto.
“This will really help us get laptops to fully furnish our Learning Center. We are requiring that students in 3rd – 6th grade spend 30 minutes either on homework or the iReady program that the Massena School District is making available this year. The additional laptops will allow more students internet access while at Club.”
Wendy’s sponsors the Car Show each year and since this year’s proceeds exceeded last years by $300, they are hoping the event will continue to grow to benefit community organizations.
