CANTON – There will still be access to the post office, library, parking and downtown businesses along Main Street, but drivers who want to get through Canton in coming weeks might have to take the detour loop north of town as East Main Street at the railroad crossing will be blocked July 1 for about six weeks.

Local traffic will be permitted, especially to downtown businesses, but the work at the railroad crossing will require no traffic there.

The official detour starts along East Main at State Rt. 310, then up to Judson Street, across to State Street and Riverside Drive to West Main before the bridges over the Grasse.

But the side streets off of Judson Street toward Main Street, such as Church Street and Court Street on the downtown side of the closure and Pleasant and Harrison Streets east of the closure will be open.

The railroad crossing work along Main Street, U.S. Rt. 11, will close that spot for about six weeks starting around July 1 as part of the Canton Village Reconstruction Project, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The closure will allow replacement of the rail crossing on East Main Street as part of the larger Main Street rebuilding project. During this time motorists will be required to avoid that spot.

The detour leaves Main Street at Riverside Drive, moves on to State Street and State Route 310, then back to Main Street.

Message boards will be set up in advance of the closure to alert motorists of the upcoming change in traffic patterns. The entire two-year road project is expected to be done this fall.
