CANTON -- All around Canton, holiday giving trees and angel trees are sporting tags for clothing and gift items for local children of 18 years and younger.
One hundred and twenty-nine families, including over 300 children, applied before the Nov. 3 deadline to participate in the Holiday Giving Tree, organized by the Canton Church and Community Program.
The holiday program has been a Canton tradition for over 40 years.
The areas served include towns and villages of Canton and Hermon, the towns of Claire, DeKalb, and Russell and the village of Rensselaer Falls.
Tags are available on the SUNY-Canton and St. Lawrence University campuses, at participating churches, and at numerous banks, businesses, and other public spaces.
Tags provide information about a child’s sex, size, and hobby, toy or game wishes.
One type of tag is available to make a financial gift to the program, and a new tag this year features a Canton Golden Bear and allows the donor to support a gift of a sweatshirt with the school logo on it.
Anyone can take a tag, purchase a gift and return to it the same location to provide a present to a local child on Christmas. Gifts and donations should be returned no later than December 12.
