CANTON -- The Nancy Wilder Palmateer Memorial Fund at TAUNY has been established to support an annual arts workshop for children.
Canton resident Nancy Wilder Palmateer loved art and sharing her handcrafts with her students, her family, and the North Country community. As library media specialist at Canton Central School, she nurtured many young readers and believed strongly in providing opportunities for people to creatively express themselves.
The announcement of the fund says that TAUNY's board of directors is honored to announce that Nancy's family has established the memorial fund.
Nancy Palmateer was a friend and loyal supporter of TAUNY, and participated in the work of the organization in several ways. Her contributions included recruiting her sister Sue Wilder to teach families how to make gingerbread houses at TAUNY each year, an event at which Nancy and other family members served as assisting "elves." Her family established the memorial fund to honor her creative side, to recognize her work with children, and to encourage hands-on engagement for young people.
"Nancy dedicated her life to helping others make the imaginary tangible through her passion for literature, arts, and crafts. By establishing the Nancy Wilder Palmateer Memorial Fund in partnership with TAUNY, we hope to continue her support for TAUNY, share her love for children and the arts, and support the cultivation of a community North Country artisans,” Palmateer's family said in a statement from TAUNY.
"The Nancy Wilder Palmateer Memorial Fund is a vote of confidence in TAUNY's efforts to make sure traditional skills are passed from one generation to the next,” Sauter said. “This gift guarantees decades of programs for young people. This is an inspired tribute to an amazing woman who made a real difference in our community."
The first Nancy Wilder Palmateer Memorial workshop will take place at The TAUNY Center on April 27.
