CANTON – The town and village are applying for $500,000 in Restore NY funding to develop a parcel of land in the Brownfield Opportunity Area.

Development of the downtown parcel, identified as blighted in the Brownfield Opportunity Area plan, is expected to cost about $1.3 million for land purchase and putting up a building with retail or professional space on the ground floor and apartments on the second floor.

The location of the property was not revealed because negotiations with the owner are not complete, said Town Supervisor David Button.

The grant guidelines require a third party to validate the costs noted in the application, and the town board has approved the expenditure of $500 to hire an architect to do that.

The grant application is to be submitted by Oct. 3.
