Local races: Lawrence, Newvine elected as Gouverneur trustees; Stevenson, Larrabee new Canton trustees; Burns wins in Brasher

With all precints reporting, Nelson Lawrence, cross-endorsed as a Democrat and Republican, and Democrat Charles Newvine will serve as village trustees in Gouverneur. They received respective tallies of 505 and 405. Republican Diane Cotter trailed with 347 votes.

Voters in Canton have elected Democrats Dwight Stevenson with 556 votes and Beth Bullock Larrabee with 715 as village trustees. Neither was an incumbent. Republican Nick Kocher received 442.

In Brasher, voters decided that Democrat Francis Burns will fill a seat on the town council. He received 330 votes to independent Francis Recore's 160.

Town of Gouverneur voters elected Democrat and Republican Timothy Mattice over Conservative Steven Jackson, 817 votes to 275.

Parishville voters picked Republican Rodney Votra as their new town supervisor over Democrat Cassie Hayes, 352-273. There was a single write-in voted for a yet-to-be-identified person.

They also chose Democrat Melvin Sweeney to the town board. He garnered 352 votes to Brian Gray's 277. There was a single write-in.

Madrid chose Democrat Liz Sharpe as their town justice. She bested Republican Bill Hull 273 votes to 183. There was one write-in vote for a candidate that hasn't yet been named.

In the DeKalb highway superintendent race, Democrat Jody Hamilton barely squeeked by his Republican opponent Alan Garand, 280 votes to 273. There were two write-ins, whose names have not been released.

In Hermon, Republican Brian Brunet won a three-way race to finish a one-year unexpired term as highway superintendent. He received 148 votes to Democrat Robert Reed's 100 and independent Butch Cleveland's 48.
