Canton village board votes to increase parking fines to $25

CANTON —Drivers who violate parking ordinances in the village will face a stiffer penalty soon.

The fine will be going up from $10 to $25.

Car owners can expect the higher fee to be leveled once Canton police receive freshly printed tickets from their supplier citing the new rate sometime in the next few weeks.

The village board here passed a resolution increasing the parking fine at their meeting Monday, Nov. 20.

The resolution raises the fee for parking in prohibited zones on certain streets, on sidewalks, between the curb and sidewalk, on front lawns, in front of driveways and in loading zones.

The parking fine for parking in handicapped areas, in fire lanes and in metered areas remains at current levels. Fines of $15 are doled out to vehicle owners who park within a fire lane and within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. Violating a handicapped parking area can result in a $50 fine.

The board held a public hearing on the matter prior to its regular meeting Monday but no major concerns were raised about the increase.

A previous public hearing on the proposal scheduled in October was canceled to allow the village attorney and board to review the parking language in the village code and how it may relate to the rate increase.

The increase was suggested by Canton Police Chief James Santimaw in September. The new rate brings village fines for errant parking closer to what is paid in neighboring municipalities.

A definitive date for when the increase will start is expected to be announced at the board’s annual organizational meeting Dec. 4.

The fine increase and when it officially takes effect will be advertised on the village website.
