CANTON – The village Board of Trustees will honor former mayor and downtown business owner Marilyn Mintener at their meeting Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building.

The owner of the Pear Tree gift shop at 77 Main St. for 36 years, Mintener was mayor for three terms from 1984 to 1991, and was a trustee before that. She was the second woman to be elected mayor of the village, after Ruth Blankman.

Mintener says she particularly remembers being one of the four or five people who started the Holiday of Lights displays downtown.

She said she was a bit overwhelmed at the prospect of being honored for her leadership in Canton.

“One person may have an idea but it’s never just one person. It takes more than one to get things moved up the ladder,” she said.

She is still active in village affairs, now serving as a member of the village Housing Authority Board of Trustees.

The board will also hear status reports on the Solar City project on 16 acres at the old Ideal Drive-In Theater property on Gouverneur Street, which is closer to construction with a revised cost figure for connection to National Grid.

In other action, the board is expected to hear a report on the asset management plan they are considering to track age, maintenance and replacement schedules for all village property, from buildings to trucks to trees.

An update on the village’s comprehensive plan is also scheduled.
