Canton VFW Ladies Auxiliary celebrates 69 years

CANTON -- The Edward C. Seymour VFW Post 1231 Ladies Auxiliary celebrated its 69th year on Sunday, March 22, with tea at the post, 34 Gouverneur St.

The Auxiliary Charter was signed on March 4, 1946 and the first meeting was held on the third Wednesday in March with first president Betty Hammond presiding.

Guests attending the tea party were past post commander John Coffey, past department president, currently National Eastern States Americanism chairman Jane Reape; District 4 president Marcia McKinney and girls scout Margaret Doty.

Doty was presented the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Silver Award for over 50 hours of community service to the "Little Free Library" project, located on the porch of the Morley Library, 7230 County Route 27, Canton.

Auxiliary members Cheryl Pearson and Linda Wilkinson were presented the Auxiliary Betty Hammond Award and Norene Sheridan was presented the Auxiliary Meritorious Service Award.

Four new members, Virginia Guyette, life member; Donna Gollinger, Nancy Kio and Robin Davis received initiation by Reape.

The auxiliary now has 55 life members and 65 continuous members.

Their next meeting is set for Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. at the post. The election of officers for 2015-26 will be held.
