CANTON -- Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church will present the Rachel Somers Grant Award to Margaret Weitzmann of Potsdam June 10 at 10:30 a.m.
The award honors people who work to make ours a more humane and progressive community. The award is made in memory of Grant, a teacher and activist who lived in Canton from 1977 until her death in 1990. The award this year is especially significant because Weitzman knew and worked with Grant.
Weitzman has been a long-time activist since moving to Potsdam in 1961. She is known for her work with many organizations over the years, including Seedcorn, a nonprofit educational organization based in Potsdam that is committed to social justice, community building, local self-reliance and sustainable development.
She has actively worked on issues related to education and the environment and more recently issues of war and peace. She is still one of the most consistent demonstrators at the Peace Vigil every Saturday morning in front of the post office in Potsdam.
