CANTON — The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton will present the annual Rachel Somers Grant Social Action award on June 17, at 10:30 a.m. This year’s recipient is Ginger Storey-Welch.
Every year the Social Action Committee of the church recognizes a member of our wider, North Country community whose volunteer work is exceptional. The award was set up in 1992 to honor Rachel Somers Grant, a young mother who worked on behalf of a variety of community groups and who believed in grass roots movements as an effective means of achieving change. The award, given each June, honors an individual who has worked, as Rachel did, to make ours a more humane and progressive community.
This year’s recipient, Ginger Storey-Welch, has provided leadership for the North Country 350 Alliance, addressing climate change, and she has worked for many years on raising environmental awareness locally and nationally. Additionally, she contributes tirelessly to a range of other social justice movements.
The award will be presented at the Sunday morning service. All are welcome to attend. The Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 3½ East Main Street, across from the park in Canton. Sunday service and religious education classes begin at 10:30 a.m. For directions and to learn more visit www.uucantonny.org.
