POTSDAM -- State police in Canton are turning to the public to help solve an identity theft case.
An unknown individual charged $500 to an alleged victim's credit card account on Nov. 16, at the Wal-Mart in Potsdam at around 8:45 p.m., according to troopers.
The victim was advised by their credit union that their account was temporarily closed due to a suspicious charge at Wal-Mart.
Troopers say video surveillance showed that the female suspect had made the transaction with the victim’s credit card information to purchase a Wal-Mart gift card in the amount of $500.
It is believed the suspect used other stolen credit cards to make several similar purchases of gift cards and American Express Visa cards at the Potsdam store, troopers say.
The Wal-Mart gift cards were used to make purchases the next day, Nov. 17, at Wal-Mart stores on Long Island, located in Valley Stream and East Meadow.
The suspect is believed to be in her early 20s, black, with the left side of her head shaved and long black hair styled on the right. In the video she was wearing jeans, a black leather jacket and was carrying a large black purse.
The suspect was seen getting into a dark-colored two-door sports car upon exiting.
If anyone has information regarding this case or knows the identity of the suspect they are asked to call State Police in Canton at 379-0012.
