CANTON -- The Canton town board will host a special joint meeting with the village board Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the acquisition and remediation of the former MR Bell’s Inc. building.

St. Lawrence County recently secured temporary access to the property in order to investigate and assess the property prior to taking full ownership due to delinquent taxes. The county typically does not take ownership of contaminated properties in order to protect taxpayers from potential cleanup costs.

Village Mayor Michael Dalton said that action has allowed the village to investigate the property with help from a few contractors.

He said the village and town are working together with hope of acquiring the property from the county. Under the current plan, the village will tear down the roof and walls of the property with an estimate not to exceed $30,000.

Town Supervisor David Button and Dalton agree that the property could be a great addition to development plans for the waterfront along Riverside Drive.

Also on the agenda is an update from the joint committees, which will likely include an update from development committee involving the Canton town and village and the village of Rensselaer Falls.
