CANTON – The town highway department will purchase a tractor it has leased for the last few years to mow town roadsides.
The town board approved the purchase at its meeting Wednesday, May 9.
The tractor will cost the town around $48,000, but has a current market value of around $75,000, estimated town board member Jim Smith.
Highway superintendent Terry Billings said the department has leased the tractor through Wells Fargo for between $5,000 and $6,000 annually for the last five years. That lease arrangement was expiring and no new lease was available as an option said Billings.
Billings said the low purchase price along with the annual cost savings of not paying a lease made the decision to buy the equipment the “correct thing to do.”
