CANTON -- The Canton Town Board has appointed Dan Moyer as the town’s deputy animal control officer.

Town supervisor Mary Ann Ashley said at the town board meeting Wednesday, May 9 that the state Department of Agriculture and Markets had sent a letter to current town animal control officer Jim Pipher requesting that a deputy be appointed to fill in for Pipher should Pipher not be able to fulfill his duties for some reason.

Moyer, the animal control officer for the town of DeKalb, has provided animal control services to the village of Canton previously.

The deputy ACO will fill in on an as-needed basis as a subcontractor. Moyer will be paid directly from Pipher for services rendered.

The appointment, approved unanimously by the town board, lasts until December 2018.

The board also appointed Zoning Board of Appeals member John Pickney as chairman of that body, and approved the appointment of retired school bus driver Dan Soulia as a ZBA member to fulfill an unexpired term until December 21, 2019.

Maureen Bomyea was appointed to serve the remainder of an unexpired term lasting until Sept. 30, 2018 on the town’s board of assessment review. Ryan Spadaccini resigned from the board last month.

Last month, the board appointed retired Canton Central track coach John Casserly to serve as a member of the planning board.
