CANTON – Canton economic development coordinator Leigh Rodriguez reported at the town board meeting Wednesday that she has recently submitted a completed application for a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant for the town and village.

Rodriguez said it would a few weeks before the town and village would hear back about the outcome of the application.

The state funded grant is administered by the North Country Regional Economic Development Council.

The town and village would use the funding to deal with two designated brownfield sites in the village, one along Riverside Drive and one behind the municipal building encompassing the county highway department, said town supervisor David Button Friday. The work would involve environmental remediation and development of the site.

“Canton would use funds to focus on projects in the downtown area, and along Riverside Drive. We have completed numerous planning documents and feasibility studies that would guide how we use the funds,” said Rodriguez in an email Friday.

Rodriguez said a short wish list of projects could include:

• construction of a pedestrian walkway under Route 11 connecting Coakley and Willow Islands;

• construction of a whitewater park on the east channel of the Grasse River in downtown;

• development of an Arts Park on Willow Island;

• funding to continue work currently being done through the NY Main Street Grant (rehabilitation of historic buildings downtown; of particular interest is the American Theater).

Redevelopment sites would specifically include 25, 27, 29 and 30 Riverside Drive, 2 Main Street and the former Jubilee Plaza, Rodriguez said.
