CANTON – Ideas for recreation trails, in the town and village of Canton and on the Grasse River, will be presented to the public Monday, April 30 at the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, 40 W. Main St.

The town and village of Canton’s Trail Committee will present its Canton Master Trail Plan, which focuses on bicycle and pedestrian connectivity and safety, at 5:30 p.m.

A presentation of the Grasse River Blueway Trail Plan will start at 7.

Over the past 18 months representatives from the Grasse River towns and villages of Massena, Louisville, Madrid, Canton and Russell, and other organizations and partners interested in recreation, community revitalization and tourism along the river, have collaborated to develop the Blueway plan, said a press release from the organization.

A blueway trail is a small boat and paddling route that combines recreation, tourism, and environmental awareness along a water body, the press release said.

Blueway trail plans focus on recreation, economic opportunity, natural resources and ecosystem, and include ideas for physical improvements such as launch points, fishing access, camping locations, points of interest for canoeists and kayakers and guides visitors to play areas, rest stations and land-based attractions.

Blueway trails connect to land-based recreation such as trail systems, villages, hamlets, and main streets to encourage travelers to visit communities and generate economic activity and promote revitalization, said the press release.

As part of the local plan’s marketing strategy, a Grasse River Blueway logo featuring a north pointing compass has been developed for signage, marketing materials and other branding efforts at the local and regional level.

The local blueway trail project is funded by the state Department of State Local Waterfront Revitalization Program under the Environmental Protection Fund, with a local match from the Town of Canton.
