CANTON – Town and village governments will be seeking an appraisal of the value of the municipal building as discussions of selling it continue.
“With the location, adjacent to McDonald’s, the right developer could buy both and do something special,” said Canton Town Supervisor David Button after a Town Council meeting Monday where the matter was discussed.
Town and village governments both occupy the Main Street building and any sale would require approval by both.
Any chance for a sale, they believe, is enhanced by the opportunity for a developer to buy the municipal building and the lot next door where a McDonald’s Restaurant has been closed.
McDonald’s announced last December that they would close the Canton restaurant as an “underperforming franchise,” and subsequently did so.
In addition to general government offices, including space for the mayor, supervisor, clerks and other office workers, the Canton Village Police Department’s headquarters is at the back of the building.
Where they would go if a sale goes through also remains under discussion.
