Canton schools announce ‘Top 10 Seniors’

CANTON – The “Top Ten Seniors” at Hugh C. Williams High School have been announced.

They include:

• Julia Bailey, daughter of John and Judy Bailey, 165 Nickerson Road. Throughout her time in high school she has been involved in many activities both in and out of school, all while maintaining a spot on the high honor roll for all four years. She was a member of the Varsity swim team during which time she was a two-time Section X Champion and received two 1st Team and one 2nd Team All-Northern Awards. She also played on the JV and Varsity Softball teams. Julia has also been co-editor of the yearbook for two years and was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2011, where she currently holds the office of treasurer. Outside of school she is involved in her parish, St. Mary’s in Canton. She is a Eucharistic Minister and also helps with various church fundraisers. She also has a job at Morgan’s Ice House, and has worked as a lifeguard for Canton Central and a babysitter for several families in the community. Julia will be attending Le Moyne College in the fall where she plans to major in some area of business.

• Katherine Christy, daughter of Michael and Jorja Christy, 2259 CR 14. Katie has participated in various sports throughout her high school career including; soccer, basketball, and softball. She was a team captain for both the soccer and basketball teams this year, and won a Section X Championship in both. Last year, she participated in the French Exchange and served as treasurer for the French Club. Katie has been on High Honor Roll all four years of high school, is currently in National Honor Society, and was recognized as an AP Scholar last year. For the past two summers, Katie worked at the Catholic Heart Work Camp with other groups to help clean up communities outside of the Boston area. Katie has also been a volunteer coach at both summer soccer and basketball camps. After graduation, Katie plans to attend the College of St. Rose in Albany. Her major is undecided at this time.

• Holly Fanning, daughter of Jen and Andy Fanning, 931 Miner St. Rd. Holly is an active participant in athletics at Canton Central School. In the fall she plays soccer, figure skates in the winter, and plays softball in the spring. She also plays on two additional soccer teams in the summer. Holly has played the piano for ten years. Holly is a member of National Honor Society where they organize events to raise money for those in need. This year she has enjoyed coaching figure skating and working at the Canton Family Physicians office. This fall, Holly will be attending either Le Moyne College or Springfield College, and plans to pursue a career as a physician assistant. She hopes to continue her involvement in sports throughout her time in college.

• Abigail Hampson, daughter of Jeff and Karen Hampson, 6224 County Route 27. Abby is a member of the National Honor Society and is a three season athlete, running cross country, indoor and outdoor track all four years of high school. Over the summer Abby is employed in dining and hospitality at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center in Greenwich, NY. Abby will be attending Alfred University in the Honors Program with a major in Athletic Training. She will also be running Division III cross country, indoor and outdoor track.

• Allyssa Hampson is the daughter of Jeff and Karen Hampson, 6224 County Route 27, Canton. Allyssa is a member of the National Honor Society and has been involved in many activities throughout high school. She participated in varsity swimming, Model UN, and student council. She has been vice-president of the class of 2013 for the past four years and president of student council for two years. Allyssa is a lifeguard, working last summer and this coming summer at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center. Allyssa is very active in her church, serving as an acolyte, a leader for Vacation Bible School, and as a youth ministry intern. In the fall, Allyssa will attend Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, where she will study Israel and Archaeology the first year and then move on to major in biblical studies and youth ministry.

• Michael Jent, son of Tom and Carol Jent, 24 Mildon Rd. Throughout his time here in Canton he has had the pleasure of playing lacrosse and running winter and spring track. Michael has also been highly involved in the music program since freshman year. During the first half of this year, he established an all-boys singing group and helped to teach the 6th grade boys beat boxing as well as singing. Each year Michael has played music and sung at places such as the nursing home and Saint Mary’s Christmas events. He has had the opportunity to participate in All County Vocal Jazz for the past two years. He enjoys playing music, helping people, hanging out with friends and wakeboarding. Michael is enrolled in the Honors Program at SUNY Potsdam for next year where he plans to get his Bachelor’s Degree followed by his Master’s Degree elsewhere.

• Jay Kepes, son of Betsy Kepes and Tom Van de Water, 110 Orebed Rd. During his high school career, Jay has enjoyed running cross-country and track. He has also been active in the Canton High School drama program, acting in plays and musical sin diverse roles ranging from a tender elephant to a neurotic New Jersey tourist to an eccentric Broadway aficionado. In addition, Jay has illustrated the posters for these shows. Jay has volunteered for community service initiatives with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton, including YSOP (Youth Service Opportunities Project) work camp and the Campus Kitchens program at St. Lawrence University. In the summer he has worked for the US Forest Service trail clearing with his family. Jay enjoys drawing, reading comic books and going on long walks with cats. Beginning in August, he will attend Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.

• Kaeli Mace, daughter of Pat and Helen Mace and my address is 491 Old Route 11 Canton.

She has participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Her team won Section X in basketball and Kaeli is the captain of the softball team. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has continuously been on the High Honor Roll. Kaeli has been a volunteer member of the Crary Mills Playground Committee since 2009, participate in the Wounded Warrior Project, coached at a summer basketball camp for three years, and helped set up and run the Alzheimer’s Walk. She plans to attend the University of Vermont and major in Natural Resources.

• Janelle Sovay, daughter of Jon and Kathy Sovay, 352 Miner Street Rd. Janelle has taken many advanced courses, including AP, honors, as well as courses at St. Lawrence University. She will be graduating with an advanced regents diploma. During the past four years she has participated in JV and Varsity soccer and softball, where she received several Academic All-Northern Awards. Janelle is also one of the head editors of the Yearbook, and the secretary for the National Honor Society. She has played on the F.C. Freeze travel soccer team and Canton summer soccer teams for the past four years. She has worked as a lifeguard both at Canton Central and St. Lawrence University. Janelle is planning to attend Elizabethtown College this fall where she will pursue a degree in occupational therapy.

• Hilary Wilcox, daughter of Ron and Diane Wilcox, 1215 CR 14, Rensselaer Falls. Hilary has been a part of many sport teams throughout her high school career including J.V. basketball, J.V. and Varsity soccer, and J.V. and Varsity softball teams. The sports teams she has been on have always been community conscientious by helping in community clean up days and doing fundraisers. She has also been very active in National Honor Society both her junior and senior year and this year was the business manager of the yearbook. Along with these extracurricular activities, Hilary has also served as a mentor and a tutor to struggling underclassmen. In the community, she has been very active through her church by providing a youth mass, serving at many local dinners and completing a full thirty hours of service through her confirmation class. Hilary is very interested in Spanish and other foreign languages and recently completed two 200 level Spanish courses at St. Lawrence University which were challenging, but very enjoyable to her. She is also interested in possibly pursuing a career which blends both Spanish and Math as they are her strong suits. She is hoping to take some “out of the box” math classes in college to see which she may like the most. This fall Hilary plans to attend St. John Fisher College in Rochester .
