CANTON – The Canton Police department notified Canton Central School this morning that they had received a report of a bear near school grounds at 8:45 a.m.
The department notified Officer Latimer who was at the school and he notified school officials.
The school reported the sighting was near the National Grid substation on State Street this morning, between the Pee Wee ball field and the old BOCES building.
“The current location of the bear is unknown,”. the school’s Facebook page says, an Canton police say they have received no further reports.
“As a precaution, all outdoor activities have been cancelled,” it said on the school’s page.
“We will also have a mid-day bus available for high school students completing their exams,” the school said.
Canton Police Dispatcher Deb Crayford confirmed that the first report of the sighting came from Rick Delorme of Canton DPW, who was driving with Leon Anson as a passenger in the vehicle. It was Anson that first saw the bear, Crayford said.
