Andrew J. Samach was an obstetrics and gynecology specialist at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

POTSDAM -- State police say a doctor from Canton-Potsdam hospital died from injuries sustained during a one-vehicle car crash after striking a utility pole and tree on State Highway 56 Monday afternoon.

The preliminary investigation revealed that around 12:40 p.m. a 2013 Audi operated by 62-year-old Andrew J. Samach, Gansevoort, was traveling north on State Highway 56 when for an unknown reason his vehicle drove off the west shoulder of the roadway striking an embankment, troopers said.

Samach’s vehicle then struck a utility pole and then a tree before coming to rest. The accident took place around 12:40 p.m.

Samach joined Canton-Potsdam Hospital in March. He was an obstetrics and gynecology specialist.

St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood responded and pronounced Samach deceased at the scene.

His body was removed to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where an autopsy was performed by Dr. Samuel Livingstone, officers said.

The cause of death was reportedly determined to be massive cerebral trauma caused by blunt force trauma due to the car crash. Coroner June Wood ruled the manner of death to be accidental.

State police said they continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
