POTSDAM -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital is displaying selected works of local artist Sharon Cheng as summer 2015’s “Artist in Residence.”

Cheng’s works will be on exhibit on the main floor of 50 Leroy Street until the end of August and are for sale.

A resident of Potsdam since 2000, Cheng is originally from Taiwan where she earned her arts degrees, and continued her studies in the U.S. as a student of art conservation and architecture.

“I am a painter who holds the ancient Chinese philosophy of ‘Chi’, also called Energy, Spirit, and Soul, deep in my heart. ‘Chi’ is the backbone of my work. In my opinion, ‘Chi’ not only pervades the universe, but is also expressed in every shape and form. ‘Chi’ is the dynamic principle of artistic creation that transcends representational appearance and sentimental atmospherics,” Cheng said.

A multi-medium artist, Cheng works in oil as well as Sumi-E, plaster, and mixed media sculpture. Recently she had three solo exhibits in New York City at the Pleiades Gallery, of which she was a member from 2008 until 2014.

Two of Sharon’s oil paintings, “Galaxy Dance” and “Sky Peeking” are respectively selected images in the SLC Arts Council 2014, and 2015 Fine Art Up North calendars. Ms. Cheng was the featured artist in the 2014 spring issue of Arts Quarterly, SLC Arts.
