POTSDAM — Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s (CPH) Center for Cancer Care recently hired nurse navigator Elise Cole.
Cole will oversee the navigation program in the implementation of national standards across the oncology service line at CPH, according to a CPH press release.
A nurse navigator is the first member of the cancer care team to personally meet with a new patient following a cancer diagnosis. The role of the navigator is to help alleviate and reduce the uncertainty and anxiety that often accompanies a cancer diagnosis by providing “navigation” through treatment plans, financial questions, and any other potential barriers to the patient’s care which may add to stress levels, the release said.
A native of the North Country, Ms. Cole earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. John Fisher College, Rochester, New York in 2013, and began her nursing career at CPH on Medical Surgical Unit 2, serving as a staff Registered Nurse (RN) and Charge RN; and then working in the Critical Care Unit. In the fall of 2015, she joined the Center for Cancer Care as an infusion nurse. Ms. Cole earned her OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) in 2017, reflecting her commitment to the highest nursing standards in oncology. Prior to transitioning into the Nurse Navigator role, Ms. Cole was Charge RN for the Center for Cancer Care Infusion Suite.
According to Center for Cancer Care Director Ben Hull, “A strong navigation support system is absolutely crucial to providing high-quality patient care in oncology. A cancer diagnosis compounds the complexity of an intimidating healthcare process, and we are committed to comprehensively guiding our patients from initial diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.”
