Canton-Potsdam Hospital welcomes new nephrologist, hospitalist

CANTON – Canton-Potsdam Hospital recently welcomed a new a hospitalist and nephrologist to their staff.

Varma began seeing patients June 28. He consultats at the E. J. Noble Professional Building in the primary care practice of Dr. Brian Kerrigan and Dr. Nick Knowles at 80 East Main St.

Nephrology is the medical diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic conditions of the kidneys. Varma sees patients for chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, kidney disorders related to diabetes, electrolyte imbalances, or unexplained presence of protein or blood in the urine, incidental diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease as seen on a CT, ultrasound, or MRI study, renal stones, and difficult-to-treat hypertension.

He also sees patients who may be expected to need dialysis.

He received his medical degree from the Topiwala National Medical College in Mumbai, India. He completed a medical residency at Metropolitan Hospital of the New York Medical College in New York City.
