POTSDAM -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital staff members recently donated to cancer survivors through Joanne’s Gift of Love. They gave blank journals, blankets, knit booties, puzzle books, and personal items to comfort and distract patients during their treatment. Joanne’s Gift of Love is named after local educator Joanne Bigwarfe who died of cancer in May 2012.

Sen. Patty Ritchie is taking nominations for her Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence through May 9.

The award is to honor teachers who go above and beyond to help students succeed.

Last year, the Heuvelton Republican awarded upwards of 40 educators from St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Oswego counties. Teachers in those three counties are eligible.

Nomination forms can be found on www.ritchie.nysenate.gov, or those interested in nominating an individual can call 782-3418 to have a form mailed to them.

All nominees will be recognized at a special event on May 30.
