POTSDAM -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital held its first “Healing Hands of Art” day Jan. 31, featuring an exhibit of employee and staff art.

Works by sculptors Dr. Jan Close and Dr. John Savage; a leather painting by Catherine Pomerleau, respiratory therapy director; photographic exhibits by Christopher Dunn, environmental services, and Laura Cordts, director, wellness and sustainability; paintings by John B. Savage Sr. and Christine Saraiva, patient representative; wall murals and tiles by Maya Petrovic, accounting assistant; and a quilt by Deborah White, RN, were on display.

Expressive therapist Sherry Ryan was on hand to guide visitors through various self-expression mediums.

Later in the day, local pleine air artist Bill Parmer presented a talk to the community entitled “Through the Eyes of the Artist.”

This event was conceived and developed by Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s CPHealthy Team. The mission of CPHealthy is to more fully integrate “health” into the hospital’s work culture and practices, in order to positively impact employee wellbeing and enhance the hospital’s performance.

“Art can help reduce stress and anxiety – both for those creating the artwork, and those viewing it,” said Cordts. “We were excited to incorporate creativity into our wellbeing program, which up until now has focused primarily on things like physical activity and nutrition.”

Local artists works are featured at several of the hospital’s clinics and centers. For more information on the art program, please contact Deborah Chase-Lauther at 261-5413, or dchaselauther@cphospital.org.
