POTSDAM – A specialist in pain medicine and procedures has joined Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s medical staff.

Dr. Lai Kuang is certified through the American Board of Anesthesiology. He received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Conn. and completed a medicine and surgery internship at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa.

“Dr. Kuang’s practice involves advanced techniques, such as spinal cord stimulator implants, which can relieve pain with electric pulses to the spinal cord,” said Canton-Potsdam Hospital President and CEO David B. Acker. “Chronic pain can radically interfere with a person’s ability to earn a living and enjoy life; it’s critical to offer patients options, in medically appropriate cases, that do not have the potential to lead to addiction,” he added.

Medical specialists trained to treat pain use a variety of methods such as medication, alternative therapy, injections, nerve blocks and surgery. Kuang is experienced in the medical management of all sorts of pain or headaches, complementary therapeutic options, and an extensive range of procedural techniques.

During his medical school training, Kuang provided free healthcare to underserved migrant farm workers around Hartford, Conn., served as an academic tutor to premed and medical students and a preceptor for problem-based learning at the University of Connecticut Health Center, and assisted in Connecticut Department of Public Health hospital site visits for quality assurance for the office of Health Systems Regulation.

He completed his residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in pain management at several south Florida hospitals through the University of Miami, where he also served as assistant professor of anesthesiology.

Dr. Kuang will begin seeing patients on June 3. His office is at 190 Outer Main St., the NATCO Building, in Potsdam.

Kuang is fluent in English, Spanish, and Chinese and is relearning French.
