Canton-Potsdam Hospital construction fund-raising campaign pledges top $2 million, the most in history

POTSDAM -- The Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation says pledges to the “Constructing Healthier Communities” capital campaign have topped $2 million, making it the largest and most successful campaign in the hospital’s 85-year history.

The goal for the campaign is to raise at least $2.3 million by the end of the summer. In the next few weeks, community members may receive a mailing inviting them to contribute to the campaign.

The “Constructing Healthier Communities” campaign was launched in support of the hospital’s recent construction and renovation projects at the E.J. Noble Building in Canton, the former St. Mary’s School building at 49 Lawrence Ave. in Potsdam, and the new Center for Cancer Care on the hospital’s main campus. Together, these projects comprise the hospital’s most ambitious construction effort ever, at a cost of more than $16 million.

“Our hospital undertook these projects because the need for health care services in our area is great,” notes Campaign Chair Jacquelyn Kuno. The North Country has higher than average incidence of several types of cancer, and fewer primary and specialty care physicians per capita.

“To recruit physicians, and to meet its mission of providing skilled, compassionate and cost-effective primary, specialty and cancer care, our hospital simply had to grow,” she says.

While the projects are now complete or nearly complete, the hospital is just beginning to pay for them. “Community support is significantly reducing the hospital’s debt burden, which will allow the hospital to continue moving forward with new initiatives to better serve our communities,” says Kuno.

The $2 million already pledged includes significant contributions from the Northern New York Community Foundation, the area universities, Kinney Drugs, Alcoa and many other local and regional businesses, as well as the hospital’s medical staff, employees, board members and the public.

“It has been so gratifying to see different sectors of our communities coming together in support of our hospital,” notes Kuno. “All of us involved in the campaign are humbled by, and deeply grateful for, this outpouring of support.”
