CANTON – Canton Village Police are warning residents of recent scams by mail, phone and email

The most recent scam from came from a group called BillTrust Financial Incorporated.

Chief Lori McDougal says the swindlers informed a Canton resident that he or she was a prizewinner in a European, African and USA sweepstake promotional draw.

“They mailed the resident a check for $3,950 and advised them to deposit it into their account to pay for the processing fee of $3600,” McDougal said. “If they in turn send a check back to them for $3600, they will give them their winning prize money with a certified check and it will be brought to them in person by a special courier company.”

McDougal said the check they mailed the resident looks very authentic, but it is a scam. Canton police are advising residents to contact the police if they receive questionable mail from the postal service, suspicious email or by phone.

“Please do not give out any personal or financial information over the phone or respond to anything that appears to be “Too good to be true.”

McDougal said these scams have been reported frequently in recent weeks.
