CANTON -- Canton police are warning St. Lawrence County residents of a telephone scam that has popped up where people claiming to be National Grid representatives say they will turn off your electric power unless you send money.
Canton Police Chief Lori McDougal said the scammers are instructing people to go to the nearest Dollar General Store to get a money order and then to submit payment through a toll-free number.
“The scammers appear to be targeting businesses at this time,” McDougal said.
McDougal recommends those with any questions about this scam should call call their local police department, or contact National Grid customer service at 1-800-642-4272.
