Canton police to target pedestrians and drivers using unsafe practices beginning Monday

CANTON -- The Canton Police Department will increase pedestrian safety enforcement beginning Monday.

The detail will run through to Dec.31 and focus on collision causing factors involving motorists and pedestrians.

The department will direct its attention to areas around the village where we have previously had vehicle-pedestrian collisions, “close-calls” and complaints. Special attention will be given to drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or any other dangerous violation.

Additionally, officers will take action against pedestrians committing violations such as crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Pedestrians should cross the street only at marked crosswalks or at corners.

According to New York State’s “See! Be Seen!” campaign, the responsibility for preventing accidents falls upon all parties.

Drivers are urged to expect pedestrians, pay attention, not text while driving and obey the speed limit.

Pedestrians, conversely, are urged to use the crosswalks, obey signals, look left-look right-and look left again, not to text while crossing and to pay attention.

Police also included some advice regarding rights of way and safety advice:

• At signalized intersections, pedestrians crossing with the light have the right of way over vehicles turning across their paths.

• At other marked crosswalks and at intersections, pedestrians have the right of way. Vehicles in both lanes must slow down or stop to let them cross.

• Pedestrians crossing at random locations (“Jaywalking”) must yield to all vehicles.

• Pedestrians must use sidewalks whenever they are safely available. When sidewalks are unavailable, pedestrians must walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.

• Pedestrians should help drivers to see them by wearing light or bright colors and/or reflectors, or by carrying a flashlight.

• Drivers must yield the right of way to any pedestrian on a sidewalk, or one who is crossing the street with a guide dog, or with a white or metallic cane.

• Drivers should use special care when backing up, making sure that no one is in the vehicle’s blind spot.

• It is illegal to overtake and/or pass a vehicle that has stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
