CANTON -- A 30-year-old municipal building telephone system may be replaced in 2018, once village and town officials and department heads review current needs and other options.
A committee was formed by the town council and village trustees Monday, June 19, at a joint meeting of the two boards to review the telecommunications needs at the municipal building and to make recommendations to both boards.
The committee, which includes Canton town clerk Lisa Hammond, village clerk Sally Noble, and representatives from the police department, will get a 30-minute primer on modern phone systems from local tech afficiando Toby Irving, who was in attendance at the meeting, prior to assessing the needs of the building. Irving was also named to the committee by the trustees and council due to his expertise and community involvement.
Committee members will determine what types of systems are available for both the general municipal building and the police department offices, which the boards thought would require a separate system.
The current system has been used at the town and village offices for about 15 years. This is the same system used by Canton Federal for nearly 15 years before they donated it to the village and town, said town supervisor David Button.
