CANTON -- A Canton man completed his second run across New York State and established the fastest known time for the journey.
Dan Dominie, 53 of Canton, made the trek Aug. 7-14, 2017.
The North Country runner ran self-supported North to South from the near Canadian border along the St. Lawrence River north of Massena, beginning Aug. 7, to the Pennsylvania border finishing on Aug. 14 just south of Damascus, for a total of 273 miles in eight days.
Dominie averaged 34 miles a day at slightly more than a 12 minute 40 second per mile pace overall with day seven the longest run day at 49 miles and day two the shortest at 27 miles.
This is the second crossing of New York State for Dominie, who in 1992 at age 28 ran a supported solo run West (from Buffalo, NY) to East (to Albany, NY) for 283 miles in 6 days (47 miles a day average). Unlike that first crossing, this second crossing was done without the aid/support of a crew along the route of the journey.
Instead, running the average 8-10 hour days with minimal backpack and gear and either camping roadside or utilizing motel accommodations when able at night. Food and beverages needs were picked up from stores/eateries along the route as necessary.
Dominie has been running competitively for 43 years and is recently retired from the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Division with 26 years service and currently works part-time as a Certfied Nurse’s Aide in the Resident Activities department at United Helper’s Maplewood campus.
The son of Bernard and Patricia Dominie of Canton, Dan and wife Renee (LaPointe) are parents to son David (wife Kate) and grandparents to Rudy and Jack LaPointe.
