The Canton Police Department arrested Cody W. Horrock, 20, 49 West Main St., Apt. A-1, for his part in Sunday’s fire at the Canton Dairy Queen, the press release from Police Chief Jim Santimaw said.
Horrock was charged with third-degree burglary, a Class D felony, and fourth-degree grand larceny, a Class F felony and was arraigned in Canton Town Court early Wednesday morning.
No mention was made of any charges related to arson, but Santimaw said more charges are expected to be made “in the near future.”
Horrock was ordered held in the St. Lawrence County Jail on $1,000 cash bail.
Thus far, Chief Santimaw said, Horrock “is believed to have acted alone in the commission of this crime and there are further charges expected to be levied in the near future.”
Horrock is scheduled to reappear in Canton Town Court Aug. 22.
The Dairy Queen at 51 Gouverneur St. was heavily damaged in the fire, which was reported to Canton Fire and Rescue at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 5.
The structure was declared a total loss after about 10 hours of effort by Canton volunteers and others from several area departments.
No one was injured in the blaze.
Santimaw noted that the Canton Police Department was assisted at the scene by the New York State Department of Fire Prevention and Control, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Canton Fire & Rescue and many other area fire departments.
