POTSDAM – A Canton man was charged Saturday with unlawful possession of marijuana stemming from a Jan. 3 fatal accident, according to state police.
Zachary S. Morris, 25, was issued a ticket for unlawful possession of marijuana in relation to the January incident in which a Russell man was killed following a car-pedestrian collision on U.S. Highway 11.
Although Morris was charged with possessing marijuana, he has not been accused of driving under the influence by state police. At the time of the accident Morris was transported to the Canton Potsdam Hospital for diabetic shock and later released.
The preliminary investigation revealed victim, 56-year-old Richard A. Mackin was walking on the north shoulder of U.S. Highway 11 when he was struck from behind by a 2007 Hyundai Sonata, operated by 25-year-old Zachary S. Morris of Potsdam, who was traveling north.
Mackin was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene by St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood.
His body was removed to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where an autopsy was performed on Jan. 4 by Dr. Samuel Livingstone, troopers said.
The cause of death was reportedly determined to be cerebral avulsion resulting from the collision. Coroner June Wood ruled the manner of death to be accidental.
