CANTON – A fire at Eben Holden dining hall at St. Lawrence University caused smoke damage to a women’s bathroom.
Canton firefighters responded to the blaze around 11 a.m. Wednesday after a custodial worker noticed smoking coming out of a door of a women’s restroom, according to Canton Fire Department Chief Robert Crowe.
The fire originated in a light fixture in the ceiling, he said.
Part of the ceiling fell onto the sinks and caught hand sanitizer dispensers on fire as well, Crowe said. “The sanitizer being alcohol based caused the fire to burn rapidly.”
A water extinguisher was used to put out the flames.
“There was a lot of smoke with a lot of plastic burning,” Crowe said. “Mostly we had to evacuate the smoke.”
No injuries were reported and firefighters were back to the station around 11:30 a.m., he said.
