CANTON – Canton’s Department of Public Works has been busy and is reminding residents to keep sidewalks in front of their homes cleaned off as snow continues to fall.
On Jan. 29 Village Superintendent Brien Hallahan reported three water leaks in the village: one on the corner of Riverside and Main Streets, one at Judson and Goodrich Streets, and one on Buck Street. Repair work in sub-zero weather continued into the weekend.
“This is obviously a tough time of year with frost currently reaching 42 to 48 inches deep under roads, sidewalks, and plowed areas,” said Hallahan. “We appreciate everyone’s patience with traffic delays in these areas and as sidewalk plowing takes a backseat.”
Hallahan said that clearing sidewalks of snow and ice is the responsibility of the property owner even though the village crew plows and clears sidewalks when possible.
On behalf of all residents, the Village Board commended and thanked the DPW crew for their efforts this cold winter.
“Just think what this work is like for our employees. It is -9 out right now and they are working in water. One cannot really appreciate what they do unless you have worked in those conditions,” Trustee Mike Dalton said in a message to the board.
