Canton dissolves health district, allows county to take responsibility

CANTON — The town board has dissolved its local health district and the position of local health officer. The town is opting instead to have the St. Lawrence County Wide Health District take over those responsibilities at no cost to the town.

The board passed a resolution at its meeting Wednesday, Feb. 14, approving the move.

Dr. Daniel R. Palmateer, a general practitioner based in Canton, was the town’s appointed health officer.

The town budgeted $2,500 for the appointed position in the current year’s budget. Dr. Palmateer was paid $1,400 last year for serving as Canton’s local health officer.

“This would relieve us of that cost, so to me, it makes sense,” said Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley.

According to state public health code, the local public health officer is generally charged with inspection of the municipality and sites of public assembly according to the standards of the sanitary code and enforcement of that code.

With the establishment of the county-wide health district, the town board determined that Canton fielding its own local health officer and district was unnecessary.

The board approved the resolution unanimously by a roll call vote.
