CANTON -- The Tuesday night Democratic caucus in Canton produced five candidates for the ballot while a Democrat county legislator took an opportunity to announce his resignation from the board.

Democratic County Legislator Steve Putman, representing the Village of Canton, announced that he was stepping down from the legislature at the end of December. He said another Canton Democrat would then be appointed by the legislature to take his place to serve until the November 2016 elections.

Canton Democrats have picked their November candidates for mayor and two trustee seats.

On Sept.15, Canton town and village Democrats caucused as an overflow, standing-room-only crowd in the Canton Municipal Building basement to elect five candidates for the ballot.

In the early Democratic town caucus Rosemary Philips with 56 votes, and Bob Washo with 52 votes, beat out Sigie Barr Sapp, with 33 votes, for the two seats on the Canton Town Council.

Incumbent Democratic Town Council member Jim Smith attended the caucus but was not nominated for re-election.

After the town caucus, Democrats held a village caucus.

For the mayor slot, Mike Catanzaro nominated Republican and former Mayor David Curry, seconded by Democratic Town Council member Daniel Fay.

Curry, who received 4 votes, was the only candidate to be nominated for mayor.

Curry will attend the 2015 Republican village caucus on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Canton Municipal Building basement.

Incumbent one-term Democratic Canton Village Trustee Carol Pynchon, nominated by retired Family Court Judge David Nelson, received 35 votes.

Political newcomer Sean O'Brien, nominated by former Canton Democratic Committee Chair Klaus Proemm, received 38 votes. As the only Democratic nominees for trustees at the village caucus, both candidates will be on the November 2015 ballot.
