CANTON -- The town board passed a resolution clarifying the breakdown of the supervisor’s pay Monday night after the board went into a lengthy executive session following their joint meeting with village trustees.

At a town council meeting last Wednesday, June 14, Councilman Rob Washo raised questions regarding how the town’s bookkeeper and the supervisor were compensated. Washo said he had researched the matter and could not find in board records where the council had voted to pay town supervisor David Button for both positions.

According to town supervisor David Button Tuesday morning, the board clarified the language Monday night, passing a resolution which pays him $14,977 for supervisor’s duties and $10,023 for bookkeeping duties. Mr. Button also has descretion to hire a secretary within his office’s budget if he choses.

Button has been assisted in the supervisor’s office for several years with bookkeeing and other secretarial duties by his wife, who makes a salary which is “pennies on the dollar,” and paid out of his allotted budget for the office, Button said at the June 14 meeting.

The resolution passed unanimously. The supervisor abstained from the vote.
