CANTON – The Volunteer Transportation Center Inc. (VTC) has received a grant of $1,000 from the Corning Incorporated Foundation.
Each dollar donated provides two miles of transportation ($1,000 equals 2,000 miles).
The funds received from the Corning Incorporated Foundation will assist volunteer drivers in providing transportation to critical health services including renal dialysis and cancer treatment.
Volunteers also support the community by providing transportation to food sources once per month.
“This will go a long way in supporting mileage reimbursement for the volunteer drivers in St. Lawrence County that are each day, taking seniors and others without transportation to their medical appointments,” said Sam Purington, executive director.
A core group of more than 100 volunteer drivers donate their time day in and day out to ensure the residents of St. Lawrence County who have no transportation alternatives have access to the care they deserve, said a press release from the VTC.
In 2017 this group of volunteer drivers provided 7,349 charitable trips spanning 232,251 miles for St. Lawrence County residents, the press release said.
This resulted in 10,673 St. Lawrence volunteer hours served by over 100 volunteer drivers, for St. Lawrence County neighbors.
