Canton church seeks public’s help to pay for steeple repair

CANTON -- The Canton United Methodist Church is asking for public contributions to help pay for the repair of its steeple.

The church congregation has a long history in the community, holding its first service in 1806. The current church building was constructed 116 years ago and the steeple has had minimal repair since then, said a church press release. The church organized its Steeple for the People campaign last year when it discovered that the structure was in major need of repair.

The first phase of the 4-stage restoration process is complete, the press release. The church is requesting donations from the public to move forward with the other stages of the work.

Donations can be sent to The Canton United Methodist Church, Attn: Steeple for the People Campaign, 41 Court St., Canton 13617.

The church considers itself a “reconciling congregation” and is open to all, regardless of denomination. Numerous services are offered by the Canton UMC, including free community dinners, visitation site for the Department of Social Services, support group meeting site, Cub Scout pack organization, plays, church school and other events.
