CANTON -- The Canton Church and Community Program has won $20,000 in a national $1.5 million food pantry holiday makeover contest sponsored Wal-Mart.
The Church and Community Program, 7 Main St., ended online voting in 62nd place with 1,548 votes. First place Chesapeake Cares Food Pantry tallied 8,731 and Bible Deliverance Temple netted 1,527 in 75th place.
Walmart is donating a total of $1.5 million that will be divided up between the 75 pantries with the most votes.
The money is to be used to update the Canton facility.
The top 75 pantries receiving votes will each receive $20,000, according to Raymond Crosby, contest program director.
The Canton non-profit program provides food, clothing and provides various forms of assistance to people in need.
