CANTON – About 40 students at Canton Central School will present the comedy “Once Upon a Mattress” April 8 and 9 after working on the production four days a week for about three months.

Students auditioned for parts right before Christmas break, which gave them time to learn their lines, blocking, choreography and music while off of school, said Lindsey Fifield, stage director for the play.

“I am really impressed with their dedication,” she said. “Some students would come directly from sports and be eating their dinner as we began practice.”

Students practiced after school Monday through Thursday for two and half hours each day, Fifield said.

“It is very comedic and humorous,” she said about what to expect of the show “There is a lot of dancing…people will like the Spanish panic dance.”

The play will take place in the high school auditorium at 7:30 p.m. both Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9.

“It is the story of the princess and the pea…there is a curse on the kingdom and a princess must be found in order to break the curse,” Fifield said. “You’ll have to come found out what happens.”

Several staff and community members donated their times to make the production happen. Kim Busch is in charge of music. Erin Lassial is the choreographer. Sue and Lauren Dean take care of costumes. The stage manager is Tucker Catanzaro and Celse McAloon is the assistant stage manager.

Scenic design is provided by Bill Newman through a grant, Fifield said.

This year the cast includes: Abby Anson, Sierra Ashlaw, Zach Barnes, Claire Bartlett, Brandon Calton, Lilly Clifford, Emma Crowell, Sunshine Cushman, Elizabeth Davis, Cody Dollinger, Margaret Doty, Ian Erlichman, Connor Falen and Grace Franklin.

More cast members include Luke Frazer, Lindsey Frazer, Eric Gagliardi, Mike Gagliardi, Lucy Jenkins, Brianna Larrabee, Kiersten Larrabee, Ricky Lashock, Noah Longshore, Molly McMasters, Anna Monroe, Sam Moses and Haley Newman.

Also performing will be Izzy Newman, Rachel Noble, Riley O’Shea, Sarah Rivers, Liam Rodee, Bridger Royce, Katja Schmid-Doyle, James Sosebee, Marilee Storm, Brandon VanBrocklin, Brittany Wilcox, Noah Writsel and Ticia Yerdon.

Tickets can be purchased at the high school office during normal school hours and are $7 for students and senior citizens and $10 for adults.
