Canton Central School District working on budget, sets hearing for May 3, vote May 15

CANTON — A public hearing will be held in the Hugh C. Williams Senior High School Learning Resource Center Thursday, May 3, at 6:45 p.m. for the presentation of the 2018-2019 budget.

The budget vote and election of the Canton Central School District will be held Tuesday, May 15, in the Hugh C. Williams Senior High School Learning Resource Center from noon. to 8 p.m. Voting on the 2018-2019 School District Budget, candidates for the Board of Education, and other propositions, as needed, will be held at that time.

“With the exception of a tax cap limit, which is 2.67 percent, I will not have any definitive answers to your questions until the governor and legislature finalizes the state budget, which will hopefully occur within the next two weeks,” Canton Central Superintendent William “Bill” Gregory said when asked about this year’s budget.

The school district budget has not been finalized, but information regarding the budget to be voted upon will be mailed to district residents no later than May 9. Copies of the budget, as well as the tax exemption impact report, will be available in the district office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. beginning April 26.

There will be three vacancies on the Board of Education this year. All three vacancies are for three-year terms. Petition forms to be filed for these vacancies can be obtained from Autumn F. Stearne, Clerk of the Board of Education, at the District Office, Canton Central School, 99 State Street, Canton, New York, commencing Monday, April 2, between 8 a.m. and 4p.m., except Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.

Petitions must be filed no later than 5 p.m. Monday, April 16. On April 16, the district clerk will be in the district office to accept petitions until 5 p.m. A lottery drawing for positions on the ballot will be held in the district office April 16 at 5:05 p.m.

Notice is also given that applications for absentee ballots may be obtained from the district office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays. Completed applications must be received by the district clerk at least seven days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. Absentee ballots must be received by the no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 15.
