Canton Central names graduating academic top 10

CANTON -- Canton Central School recently named their academic top ten students for the class of 2014. The following students were named to the list.

Grace Brown is co-president and treasurer of the Environmental Club and a member of the National Honor Society. She volunteers with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton, and at Indian Creek Nature Center. She is interested in Environmental Studies, Sustainable Agriculture, and Nutrition. She will attend College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine with a major in Human Ecology. Grace Brown is the daughter of Katherine and Bill Brown.

Gemma Del Rossi has spent her high school career participating in a multitude of activities: Model United Nations, Environmental Club, National Honor Society, track and field, cross country, Senior Band, and Jazz Band. In track, she owns the school record in the 600m run, the section record in the 800m run, and is a member of the section record-holding 4x800m relay. Outside of school, Gemma has volunteered with NYSARC Community Arts, GardenShare, and the Remington Arts Festival. Gemma will attend the University of Vermont where she will be studying Environmental Science in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources and will be running Division I Cross Country and Track. Gemma Del Rossi is the daughter of Alison and Dennis Del Rossi.

Throughout high school, Rachel Horwitz has been onstage in the fall plays and the spring musicals, as well as performing in Select Choir, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Senior Band, Senior Chorus, and Vocal Jazz. She was chosen for various ensembles in All-County and Area All-State festivals, and was a member of the NYSBDA Honor Jazz Ensemble this March. Rachel is a member of the Canton Thespians and is treasurer of National Honor Society. She has volunteered for Community Performance Series by ushering and working backstage with costumes, and has also served at the annual Congregation Beth El Food Festival for seven years. This summer, Rachel will be onstage in the Community Performance Series productions of Cats and Anything Goes, and is excited to be attending New York University in the fall. Rachel Horwitz is the daughter of Jody and Steven Horwitz.

Evan LaPoint has been on high honor roll throughout high school, is currently in National Honor Society, and was recognized as an AP Scholar last year. During his high school career, Evan has participated in soccer, basketball and track. He was a member of the varsity soccer team during which time he was a two-time Section X Champion and received First Team All-Northern Awards. Evan was a captain for the basketball team this year and earned First Team All-Northern. He works part-time at Price Chopper and the SLU Golf Course and has also been a volunteer coach at both summer soccer and basketball camps. This fall, Evan will be attending Clarkson University and plans to pursue a career in business. Evan LaPoint is the son of Brad and Karen LaPoint.

Throughout her four years of high school, Clare Olin  has participated in many academic and extracurricular activities. Clare has been a member of the varsity swimming and track and field teams and has received All-Northern awards for both. Clare has volunteered time in her community by participating in Make-A-Difference Day and Relay for Life for the last four years. During the summer she works as a Lifeguard at Taylor Park in Canton. Clare will be attending Syracuse University in the fall as an undeclared major in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. Clare Olin is the daughter of Ernest and Judy Olin,.

Throughout high school, Elizabeth Pearson has actively participated in the Environmental Club, softball, soccer, and volleyball. She has also participated in various clean up days and volunteered at campus kitchens, as well as worked at children's Pitch Hit and Run competitions. For the past few years she has worked as a babysitter and as an umpire and pitching instructor for Pee-Wee softball. This fall, Elizabeth plans to attend SUNY Cortland to major in athletic training. Elizabeth Pearson is the daughter of Bill and Caroline Pearson.

Lindsay Proulx is a three sport athlete participating in soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field. She received First Team All-Northern and Defensive MVP in Soccer and First Team All-Northern and Field Event MVP in Track. Lindsay has been on high honor roll all four years of high school and is president of the National Honor Society. She has helped in the community clean-up days and prepared Heritage Park for planting. Lindsay will be attending Elmira College this fall with interests in neuroscience, psychology, and business. Lindsay Proulx is the daughter of Gary and Terri Proulx.

Throughout high school, Abbigail Savage has taken numerous AP courses, held status on the high honor roll, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. Her extracurricular activities include involvement in the music and arts programs as lead trumpet in school concert and jazz bands and as a participant in All County and State music festivals and NYSBDA. Other activities include independent horseback riding, snowboarding, and culinary arts. Abbie has participated in her community through set construction for high school, university, and community theatre performances, activism for public school funding awareness (trip to Albany, NYSUT rally), and attendance at the HOBY Leadership conference in the spring of her sophomore year. Abbie’s future plans include studying psychology with a concentration in neuroscience starting at SUNY Potsdam this coming fall. Abigail Savage is the daughter of Tim and Jill Savage.

Throughout high school Carly Whiteford has participated in varsity indoor and outdoor track, varsity swimming, and varsity cross country. She has also been a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Band, and is currently an officer for the Class of 2014. Carly has played the cello for the past four years and participated in Area All-State Orchestra and NYSSMA Solos. Through the National Honor Society, she has given her time to activities such as middle school Fun Nights to benefit the Bear Pack fund and Zachary Hamilton, making holiday cards for Maplewood residents, and the Bear Pack Fund Bake sale. Outside of NHS, she participated in several other fundraisers for Zach Hamilton, raked leaves for Make-a-Difference Day, picked up litter, landscaped and planted trees, and helped orchestrate the Banford Family Fitness Nights. Babysitting, doing lawn work, and lifeguarding are her primary jobs outside of school and sports. This fall, Carly plans to attend Clarkson University where she will be majoring in Engineering and Management. Carly Whiteford is the daughter of Mary Evans and Barry Whiteford.

During Scott Wright's high school career he participated in varsity soccer, basketball, golf and track. He was a two-time Section X champion in soccer, and received First Team and Second Team All-Northern Awards. He was the recipient of the Roger Dusharm soccer award and the Gerald Hourihan basketball award. During the summer Scott has participated on the F.C. Freeze club soccer team. He has been on high honor roll all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. Scott has participated in the American Mathematics Competition for three years. He was the junior representative for the St. Lawrence Golf & Country Club at the NNY Golf Tournament in Massena in 2012. He also took part in the Potsdam Rotary Wheelchair Challenge to benefit the Wheelchair Foundation and has volunteered at the Make-A-Difference Day and Methodist Church dinners, and he has also served as an usher at his church. He has assisted with the Hoopsters Basketball tournaments during the winter and coached at the Houli Basketball Camp in the summer. He has worked as an assistant at the Partridge Run Golf Course Junior Clinic since his freshman year and has held a part-time job at the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club for the past three years. Last summer Scott participated in the AP European Studies Canton Central Germany and the Alps trip. He was recently named a Dean’s Scholar at Syracuse University. This fall Scott plans to study economics at St. Lawrence University where he has been designated a University Scholar. Scott Wight is the son of Gary and Thadine Wight.
