CANTON -- The Canton Central School Board of Education recognized the boys’ varsity basketball team with a resolution congratulating them for outstanding athletic achievement.
The team began their run at the Class B state championship by winning their first Section 10 title in 20 years.
The Bears opened the Class B playoffs with a “stunning” upset of the number one ranked team in the state, Canton Central Superintendent William Gregory said.
Canton went on to complete a come-from-behind victory in the second round over the Section VII champion.
From there, the Bears advanced to their first final four in school history where it rolled past its semi-final opponent earning a spot in the finals. The team lost the championship game and finished as runner-up in Class B state competition.
The team is led by head coach Troy Lassail and assistant coaches William Porter, Garrett Kinnen and Goerge Gordon.
Gregory said the team is losing a handful of seniors but there is “a lot of talent and the prospects for next year looks promising.”
The board stated in their resolution “that it is with tremendous pride and appreciation that the Canton Central School District Board of Education duly recognizes the Canton Central Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team for outstanding achievement in interscholastic athletics. The Team’s extraordinary efforts reflect distinct credit upon the Team members, its coaches, our school, and the Canton community at large.”
